TOK RAJA (LUANG PHOR KRON)

WAT UTTAMARAM (WAT BANGSAEK)

PASIR MAS, KELANTAN

Khron Ratchanaren (known as Tok Raja) was born on Thursday December 1, BE 2419 (1876). He was sent to Wat Uttamaram by his parents when he was 12 years old to learn Buddhism and Thai language. He stayed with Ajarn Lok who was the Chief Abbot of the temple at that time.

Tok had shown great interests in Buddhism and became a "Dek Jom" under the supervision of Bhikkus(Monks) in that temple. Besides, he also learned crafting and construction. He once told the devotees that even from an early age, he cherished the ambition of joining the monk hood and stay in the temple to learn Buddhism unlike his other kampong (village) boys of the same age who more preferred to stay in the houses in the kampong.

Ordination (Upasombot)

Tok joined the monkhood (Bhikkhu) on 15th June 2438 (1895) when he was 21 years old. The ordination took place at Wat Uttamaram and he was ordained by the following monks:

1.) Phra Upatcha Palad Chai from Wat Mai Suwankiri

2.) Phra Kru Ophart Phuthakhun from Wat Chon Prachumthart

3.) Phra Athikam Phut from Wat Banglakwa Silaloi

Tok was given a Buddhist name and he was known as Punnaksuwanno

After becoming a monk, Tok Raja stayed at Wat Uttamaram for two phansa (raining retreats) after that Tok traveled to Southern Thailand to learn Pali language (used in Theravada Buddhism) as the main official language. He resided at Wat HuaPhom Nai in Songkhla and advanced his studies in Buddhism. He also learned "Phra Kartha Vertmon" which consists of "Khamphi Mulkachai" and "Khamphi Dhamma Bodhi" in Wat HuaPhom Nai including Vipassana Kammathan technique in Songkhla for 15 years. In the year BE2449, Tok Raja was appointed Chief Abbot of the Wat for 10 years. Due to the fact that he was required to be back in Malaysia, he relinquished his post as the Chief Abbot of Wat Hua Phom Nai. Once returned to Malaysia, he became the Chief Abbot of Wat Mai Suwankiri for 6 years before being transferred back to Wat Uttamaram and became they Chief Abbot there in the year BE2468. He taught Vipassana Meditation and Ubasok Ubasika Buddhaborisat to the kampung folks including the "Kartha Vertmon" to his disciples and devotees.

TOK RAJA & THE SULTAN OF KELANTAN

When Tok Raja came back from Songkhla, Thailand he stressed alot on knowledge & skills. He worked very hard in order to expand both the knowledge & skills to devotees in Kelantan but they did not meet his expectations since at that time the society did not realized the importance of education as such, hence, was not able to achieved his mission to the fullness. In the early year of BE2491 (1948), Thai Buddhism has spread out of the country especially to neighbouring countries like Malaya. Malaysia was formerlt known as Malaya. In that year, the first Naktham school was established, the following year the same Naktham school was established in Wat Uttamaram (Wat Bangsaek) itself.

It was a resounding success in establishing these schools and Tok Raja later handed over the management of the school to Phra Maha Chan Kesaro (later became Chao Khun Chan) who possessed "Parian Tham 6 Prakyok" as a Teacher. Even though there was a shortage of teaching resources, there was a demand from monks all over Kelantan to study at Wat Uttamaram (Bangsaek) to further their studies in Buddhism and Pali and learn Naktham where the expenses incurred were manageable. It was not easy to go to Wat uttamaram at that timeas it took hours to reached by walking through the jungles. Such obstacles did not prevent these pupil monks from going to Wat Uttamaram. The first Naktham examinations were held at Wat Uttamaram (Wat Bangsaek), Kelantan.
